About Karen

Born in Tucson, Arizona, Karen grew up among the horse farms of Potomac, Maryland. The area known as ‘horse country’ provided ample opportunity for her to become involved at an early age in caring for and owning horses. At age 12, Karen’s first weekend job was cleaning stalls and exercising two horses. At age 16, Karen bought her first horse, Royal Aire, a thoroughbred/Quarter Horse who accompanied her to Sweet Briar College in Virginia known for its equestrian team and program as well as academic scholarship. Her most recent sporthorse, Radiant Sun, was an awesome off-the-track thoroughbred who competed through Training Level. Over the years Karen competed in eventing and dressage, trained under several Olympic riders (past and present), and apprenticed under outstanding horsemen.

In the early 1970’s Karen became a fan of horse racing following many of the great horses; including the local favorite Virginia bred Secretariat. Karen became more involved with racing by watching many races at the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast racetracks, such as Pimlico, Laurel, Charles Town, Philadelphia, Delaware, Monmouth, Belmont, and Saratoga. As a horse owner in small and large partnerships Karen experienced racing at all levels including several non-graded and graded stake races. These stake races included: Barbara Fritchie Handicap, Belmont Stakes, Coolmore Lexington Stakes, Ladies Handicap, Sam F Davis, Shuvee Handicap, and Tampa Bay Derby.

Karen’s passion for horses and her love of thoroughbreds led her to establish Halcyon Springs Stable. Her vision is to breed, race, retrain, and sell quality thoroughbreds to be the stars of their time. Her goal is to share this tremendous experience with others through breeding and racing syndicates.
